To help tackle the housing crisis, the Irish government has proposed new planning exemptions for standalone garden cabins. Once approved, this will make it significantly easier to create extra living space, a garden office, or a guest studio right in your backyard.
🚫 No Full Planning Permission
Proposed rules aim to exempt standalone backyard cabins from standard planning permission, a benefit currently mostly limited to attached extensions.
📏 Generous Size Limits
Under the proposals, cabins up to 40–45 m² could be exempt, provided you retain at least ~25 m² of free open space in your garden.
Important Note: These changes are currently in the legislative process and public consultation phase. While expected to be rolled out in the near future, they are not yet officially enacted law.
