Timber Cabins & Garden Rooms in Galway

Insulated Nordic timber cabins from €14,500 incl. VAT, with delivery, professional assembly and a 10-year structural warranty.

Galway is the county where the weather does most of the talking. Atlantic wind-driven rain arrives horizontally for weeks at a time, and a cabin that would be fine in a sheltered Leinster garden can have a hard life in Connemara or out towards Spiddal. That is a specification question, not a reason to avoid timber: the same climate has kept timber buildings standing along this coast for generations, provided the roof overhangs, the drainage and the finishes are right.

In practice we split Galway work between the city and its suburbs — Salthill, Knocknacarra, Oranmore, where a garden room is the usual brief — and the county, where holiday lets and year-round homes on family land are more common. East Galway around Ballinasloe and Loughrea is easier ground and an easier drive than the western seaboard.

What people in Galway build

Holiday cabins in Connemara and the coast

A compact two-bedroom cabin is the standard letting unit here. Sites are often spectacular and exposed in equal measure, so we specify for the exposure first and the view second.

Year-round homes on family land

Galway has a strong tradition of building on family sites. Our larger models work as permanent homes, but above the exemption thresholds they need planning permission, and we supply drawings and specifications for the application.

Garden rooms in the city

Salthill, Knocknacarra and Oranmore gardens take a 20–30 m² insulated room comfortably. With insulated floor and roof as standard they stay usable through a Galway winter, which is the whole point.

Planning permission in Galway

The planning exemptions are national, not local. Since 27 July 2026 a back-garden structure such as a home office, studio, gym or store can be exempt from planning permission up to 30 m² (previously 25 m²), and a detached auxiliary dwelling of 32–45m² to the rear of the main house, connected to its services, can be exempt with 14 days’ notice to the council.

What does change locally is everything around the size limit: zoning, scenic and conservation designations, protected structures and the conditions on siting and remaining open space. That makes your local authority the only reliable answer for your specific site:

Exemption figures last reviewed 18 September 2026. Source: South Dublin County Council — New Exemptions 27.07.26. This is general information, not legal advice — always confirm with your local authority or a planning professional before ordering.
