A Garden Room for Teenagers and Students: Study, Music and Space to Breathe

With the Leaving Cert year under way and college students back home more often, many Irish families are running out of quiet corners. A garden room is a practical answer: a separate, warm room a few steps from the back door that gives a teenager or student room to study, practise music or simply have some privacy.

Why a Separate Room Works

A bedroom that doubles as a study is hard to switch off from. A garden room draws a clear line between work and rest, and it takes noise, such as drums, a keyboard or late-night calls, out of the main house. For parents it also means a family home that is calmer for everyone.

What to Plan For

  • Planning: Since 27 July 2026, a back-garden structure of up to 30 m² can be exempt development. Conditions apply, so confirm with your local authority before ordering.
  • Insulation and ventilation: A well-insulated room is comfortable in January and avoids damp. See our guide to winter insulation.
  • Daylight: Large glazed doors keep a study room bright on short winter days.
  • Sound: Solid timber walls with insulation help contain music practice, and a layout that places the door away from neighbours helps further.
  • Electrics: Sockets, lighting and a data connection are installed and certified by our partner electrical contractor and quoted separately after a site review.

A Room That Grows With the Family

Today's study room can become tomorrow's home office, guest room or gym. If you expect to work from home yourself later, look at our garden offices, or browse the full garden rooms range. For help with costs, see our timber cabin prices guide.

Every cabin is finished in anthracite from roof to gables and built by a company working with timber since 1985. Call 087 104 5272 or 085 770 8683, visit our Dublin showroom by appointment, or send us a few photos of your garden and we will advise on size and siting.
