Kildare and Meath have grown faster than almost anywhere in Ireland over the last twenty years. Estates in Naas, Maynooth, Celbridge, Navan, Ratoath and Ashbourne are full of families who moved out of Dublin for more space, and many of them now work from home at least part of the week. When the spare bedroom turns into an office and the kids need somewhere to go, a timber garden room is often the simplest way to gain a room without the cost and disruption of an extension.
Why Garden Rooms Suit Commuter Belt Homes
Most homes in the commuter belt have a back garden big enough for a room of real value, but not so big that an extension is the obvious choice. A garden room keeps the house as it is, is assembled on a prepared base, and gives you a separate space with a door you can close. On hybrid working days that separation is the whole point: no commute, but still a clear line between work and home.
What to Check Before You Order
- Planning: Since 27 July 2026, a garden room, home office or gym of up to 30 m² behind the house can be exempt development. Conditions apply, so confirm with Kildare County Council or Meath County Council before you order.
- Estate rules: Some newer estates have management company covenants. It is worth reading your deeds before you choose a size and position.
- Ground conditions: Heavy clay soil is common in parts of both counties, so a well-drained, level base matters. Our assembly page explains how we prepare a site.
- Electrics and broadband: Power, lighting and data are installed and certified by our partner electrical contractor and quoted separately after a site review.
- Insulation: Insulated floors, walls and roof make a room comfortable for a full working day in January, not only in summer.
Office, Studio or Space for Family
If the room is mainly for work, start with our garden offices. For a playroom, gym or hobby space, see the full garden rooms range. If an older parent wants to live close by, the new detached auxiliary dwelling exemption of 32–45 m² may apply on a larger plot. Conditions apply, and you must give the council 14 days' notice. Local details for both counties are on our Kildare and Meath pages.
Every cabin is finished in anthracite from roof to gables, which sits well beside brick and render on modern estates. We have been building in timber since 1985, and our Dublin showroom on the Naas Road is a short drive from both counties. Visits are by appointment.
