After Dublin and Cork, Galway is one of the busiest counties for garden room enquiries we get. Remote workers who moved west, families in Knocknacarra and Oranmore who need an extra room, and owners in Connemara looking for a guest cabin all ask the same question as the evenings close in: will a timber room be comfortable through a Galway winter? It will, if it is specified for the weather it actually faces.
What Galway Weather Asks of a Garden Room
Galway gets more rain than the east coast and stronger, gustier wind, especially on open sites west of the city. That puts the focus on three things: a well-sealed building envelope, a roof that sheds water fast, and a solid, level base that keeps the timber off wet ground. For exposed sites near the coast, our guide to building on the Wild Atlantic Way goes into more detail.
Planning a Galway Garden Room
- Check the exemption: Since 27 July 2026, a garden room, home office or gym of up to 30 m² behind the house can be exempt development. Conditions apply, so confirm with Galway City Council or Galway County Council before you order.
- Face away from the prevailing wind: Put the door and the main glazing on the sheltered side where you can, usually away from the south-west.
- Insulate properly: Insulation in the floor, walls and roof makes the difference between a summer room and one you use in January.
- Prepare the base: Good drainage around the foundation matters more in the west than anywhere else in Ireland.
- Plan the services early: Electrics are installed and certified by our partner electrical contractor and quoted separately after a site review.
Choosing the Right Model
For a den, studio or hobby room, start with our garden rooms range. If the room is mainly for work, see our garden offices, built for long days at a desk. For a relative or long-stay guest on a larger plot, the new detached auxiliary dwelling exemption of 32–45 m² may apply, with conditions and 14 days' notice to the council, explained on our granny flats page.
Every cabin is finished in anthracite from roof to gables, which suits stone walls and render equally well. We have built timber buildings since 1985 and deliver and assemble across Galway.
