A timber building that would last decades in a sheltered Dublin garden needs a different specification when it faces the Atlantic, and the time to decide that is before the order, not after the first winter.
What the Coast Does to a Building
Three things set coastal sites apart. Wind loads are higher and gustier, especially on open ground with no hedging. Rain arrives sideways, so water is driven into joints that inland rain never reaches. And salt carried on the wind settles on every surface, attacking steel fixings and breaking down low-quality finishes years early. None of this rules timber out — timber does not rust — but it changes the details.
The Coastal Specification Checklist
- Stainless or hot-dip galvanised fixings: Standard zinc-plated screws and brackets are the first thing salt air finds. Upgrade every external fixing, hinge and anchor.
- Proper anchoring to the base: On exposed sites the cabin must be mechanically tied down against uplift, not simply resting on its foundation.
- A wind-rated roof covering: Metal sheet or a fully bonded EPDM membrane outperforms loose-laid felt when gales hit.
- Generous overhangs and drip details: Keeping driven rain off the walls matters more here than anywhere else in Ireland.
- A quality, breathable stain — and a shorter maintenance cycle: Plan to recoat the weather-facing elevations more often than the sheltered ones.
- Orientation and shelter: Turn the glazing away from the prevailing south-westerly where the view allows, and plant a windbreak to shield the doors.
